Stellenbosch

The picturesque town of Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, is situated about 50 km from Cape Town along the banks of the Eerste River. It was founded in 1679 by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named it after himself. Today it is home to the University of Stellenbosch and is the centre of the South African wine industry. The early settlers to this fertile region were encouraged to plant oak trees and today Stellenbosch's oak-lined streets bear testimony to this. Some of these trees have been proclaimed national monuments.

Stellenbosch is virtually surrounded by beautiful mountains. They are the Helderberg, Stellenbosch Mountain, Jonkershoek Valley and Simonsberg, which is connected to Botmaskop and the rest of the Jonkershoek mountains by the saddle of Helshoogte.

The Stellenbosch Wine of Origin area includes 106 cellars - most of which are open to the public. The heart of the town lies somewhere near Dorp Street with its venerable old buildings which are an integral part of South Africa's architectural heritage.

An important cultural centre, Stellenbosch has many galleries and museums housing important national and international art collections. The Stellenbosch Conservatoire is the country's oldest music school.
