Bonnievale The tiny village of Bonnievale, birthplace of South Africa's well-known writer, poet and artist, Breyten Breytenbach, is situated along Route 62, on the banks of the Breede River and surrounded by the Langeberg Mountain Range in the northeast, and the Riviersonderend Mountains in the southwest. It is about 180 km from Cape Town.
Known as The Valley of Cheese and Wine, there are two cheese factories, four co-operative wine cellars, four estates and two private wine producers in the area. The oldest wine cellar is Nordale Wine Cellar. The Robertson Wine Route, which includes all the wine cellars in the Bonnievale area, has in recent years won great acclaim in South Africa and around the world, for the production of outstanding white and red wines.
